The post Global Beauty Brand Aveda Now Certified Cruelty-Free With Leaping Bunny appeared first on Plant Based News.

Global beauty brand Aveda is now certified cruelty-free under Cruelty Free International’s Leaping Bunny Program.

Aveda is one of the biggest hair and skincare brands in the world, with millions of customers and thousands of salons and spas.

While Aveda was already certified cruelty-free by PETA, the Leaping Bunny Certification is internationally recognized and harder to obtain. This is because, unlike PETA, which only asks for written confirmation, Cruelty Free International requires companies to prove their claims.

Aveda claims it has never tested on animals, but it went through a “rigorous” multi-year review process to prove its cruelty-free status. It will now continue with audits every 12 months.

Aveda’s global brand president Barbara De Laere said in a statement: “Aveda was founded on the principle to care for the world we live in, and this includes always being opposed to animal testing.”

“We have been a leader in sustainability for more than 40 years. We are proud to underscore this commitment to our planet with our Cruelty Free International Leaping Bunny approval. The internationally recognizable gold standard for cruelty-free cosmetics.”

Vegan and cruelty-free Aveda

Last year, Aveda also announced it was going vegan, eliminating products like honey and beeswax from its entire product line. The move involved reformulating more than 500 products over the course six years.

At the time, the brand’s vice president of research and development Christine Hall said that removing beeswax was one of its “biggest challenges.” This is because of its integral role in creating “texture, structure, color payoff, and smoothness.”

But eventually, it managed to create a new strong and effective blend, with no need to call on bees.

Cruelty Free International’s CEO Michelle Thew praised Aveda’s “well-deserved reputation” for ethical business and sustainability. She added: “I am thrilled that this now includes Leaping Bunny approval.”

Naomi Osaka’s vegan and cruelty-free suncare line KINLÒ has launched in 2,500 Walmart stores.

The brand joins together Osaka’s heritage (Kin and Lò mean “gold” in Japanese and Haitian Creole respectively). It was designed specifically for people of color.

At the time of launch last year, the tennis champion stated: “Through my personal experience and learnings, I have found that Black, Brown, and other melanated skin-toned communities are often an afterthought in the discussion and research surrounding suncare.”

KINLÒ’s standout products include its plant-based, moisturizing Hydrating Facial Oil, which features jojoba and olive oil, and its water-resistant, lightweight Golden Rays Sunscreen SPF 50+. The latter now comes in three shades: Light, Medium, and Deep.

The brand is also launching a few new products for Walmart. These include its Always Golden Body Lotion and a Cooling Body Gel Moisturizer. The latter features soothing aloe vera and an orange peel scent.

As well as in-store, customers can also shop KINLÒ’s products at walmart.com.

Celebrities changing the beauty industry

Walmart’s beauty merchandise director Angel Beasley said Osaka is “truly a pioneer in her work.”

While things are beginning to change (largely thanks to Rihanna and her ultra-inclusive makeup line Fenty Beauty), people of color are underrepresented in beauty. And suncare is no different. Many SPFs leave a white residue on the skin, for example.

Osaka told Women’s Health: “It wasn’t enough to make products that didn’t turn our dark skin white and didn’t have harsh chemicals.”

“I also wanted to dispel the myth that just because you have dark skin and don’t burn means you don’t need to take care of and protect that skin.”

Osaka is far from the only celebrity to launch a cruelty-free beauty line.

Musician Billie Eilish recently launched a vegan fragrance, Harry Styles’ vegan cosmetics line Pleasing debuted last year, and Ariana Grande’s new brand r.e.m. beauty is also vegan and cruelty-free.

Scarlett Johansson is the latest celebrity to venture into the beauty industry, having launched her highly anticipated plant-based and cruelty-free skincare line, The Outset.

The line features five essential products – a cleanser, prep serum, moisturizer, night cream, and eye cream – all vegan and fragrance-free.

With prices ranging from $28 to $54, the items are available to buy from The Outset’s website. From April 26, they will be available from beauty retailer Sephora too.

New beginnings

In a statement, the Black Widow star said: “The Outset means a new beginning, which feels more relevant than ever at a time when we are all starting over and pressing the reset button.

“It took years for us to build a brand that was backed by quality and purpose, and I’m thrilled to finally share The Outset with the world. It’s an exciting beginning for me, as well,” Johansson said.

The Outset Johansson’s products were designed for everyone, regardless of age or gender.

Consciously Clean

The collection is described as “consciously clean, minimalist skincare essentials free from trends, harsh ingredients, and gender/age stereotypes.”

The line was inspired by Johansson’s own experience with various beauty companies. “I’ve been the face of several luxury brands throughout my career, and all of those experiences were really wonderful,” Johansson told Vogue in March.

“But … I guess I always felt like I was sort of playing a character in those campaigns, and as I evolved, I wanted to create and represent a brand that was true to me.”

Partnering with entrepreneur and beauty executive Kate Foster Lengyel, Johansson spent five years learning about the beauty industry, formulations, product development, and brand identity.

“I’ve found that great skin starts with the basics, and consumers we spoke with similarly expressed a desire to return to the essentials,” said Johansson in a statement. The Outset is centered on a simplified skincare routine: cleanse, prep, and moisturize.

Harmful ingredients

The brand excluded 2,700 harmful ingredients when formulating its products, reaching for clean and natural ingredients instead.

Among the non-toxic and cruelty-free ingredients is a trademarked formula, Hyaluroset Complex, which is a botanical alternative to hyaluronic acid. It’s said to hydrate and plump the skin to reduce fine lines, and features in all five products.

While the products themselves are cruelty-free, fragrance-free, gluten-free, nut allergen-free, and plant-based, the packaging is also designed with sustainability in mind. It features glass, bio-resin, and recycled materials where possible.

The three core products – The Cleanser, The Prep Serum, and The Moisturizer – are refillable.

The range currently includes five items. Image Credit: The Outset.

Celebrities in the beauty industry

Johansson follows a number of celebrities who have ventured into the plant-based beauty industry.

In 2021, Kylie Jenner launched a vegan make-up line to celebrate her birthday. Meanwhile, Jennifer Aniston launched vegan haircare brand LolaVie, and Ariana Grande released her much-anticipated R.E.M Beauty line just months after her cruelty-free vegan perfume.

Johansson and Lengyel plan to release more products with The Outset later in 2022. Johansson told Women’s Wear Daily:

“We have a lot of dreams for where we see our company going. I think it’s about getting this out there and then seeing how people use it, how they respond and opening up the dialogue and inviting a community of people to be a part of it.”

At Plant Based News, we love to see celebrities backing the vegan movement, from releasing vegan-friendly products to shining a light on important causes. In recent news, singer Billie Eilish wore Oscar de la Renta to the Met Gala on the condition that the designer ditched fur, acclaimed actor Jennifer Aniston launched a brand new vegan hair care product, and more.

Without further ado, here’s the latest in vegan celebrity news this week.

Billie Eilish scores a big win with Met Gala Oscar de la Renta dress

Seven-time Grammy Award-winning Billie Eilish has attracted a lot of attention since arriving at the Met Gala in an Oscar de la Renta gown with a 15-foot train.

The debut is also a victory for animals, as in exchange for Eilish wearing the dress, the vegan singer convinced the label to end its use of fur.

The move makes Eilish, this year’s Met Gala co-chair, the only notable guest to use the high-profile event to elicit an animal rights policy.

Eilish told the New York Times that she found it ‘shocking that wearing fur isn’t completely outlawed at this point in 2021’.

While the label ditched fur from its red carpet designs in recent years, fur was still being sold in stores, making up a meaningful amount of sales and profit’, the label said. Once Eilish stepped onto the red carpet, that all changed.

‘I’m honored to have been a catalyst and to have been heard on this matter’, she said.

Eilish made a huge statement for animal rights at the Met Gala this year

Jennifer Aniston releases vegan haircare brand, LolaVie

Aniston’s natural hair care brand, LolaVie is both vegan certified and cruelty-free. ‘As a Leaping Bunny certified company, we do not conduct, commission or act as a party to any animal testing’, the brand states.

Additionally, it claims its manufacturers must be cruelty-free as well.

LolaVie is also centered on utilizing natural plant-based ingredients that are ‘easy on the environment’.

For example, all formulas are made without silicones, parabens, and sulfates. Ingredients include bamboo essence and chia seeds.

Aniston teased the launch on social media last week

The line currently offers a Glossing Detangler lightweight spray at $25, which took five years to develop.

Upon announcing the news last week, Aniston told her Instagram followers: “This project has been in the works for a long time and I’m so excited to finally be able to introduce it to you.”

In New York, stars gathered to honor some of the world’s most loved music releases. Normani was among those to perform live, but not before debuting a two-piece Patrycja Pagas vegan leather dress on the red carpet.

Normani sports vegan leather at iconic music awards

Singer Normani, who is a former member of the girl group Fifth Harmony, sported a vegan leather look at the 2021 Video Music Awards this weekend.

In New York, stars gathered to honor some of the world’s most beloved musicians.

Normani was among those to perform live, but not before debuting a two-piece Patrycja Pagas vegan leather dress.

Normani is no longer vegan but supports vegan leather

Despite eating a plant-based diet in the past, Normani revealed sticking to a strict vegan lifestyle was ‘too difficult’.

In an interview with Women’s Health she said she still avoids dairy products, as well as pork and beef.

Ariana Grande’s long-awaited vegan beauty range ‘coming soon’

Grammy-award-winning singer Ariana Grande is soon to debut her vegan beauty range. This fall, R.E.M Beauty will be released after two years of development.

Grande is releasing her make-up line this fall

The star is launching the vegan line with Forma Brands, and told Allure it will come out in a series of ‘drops’.

Eye make-up is coming first, as eyes are ‘the main storytellers and sources of communication’ Grande added.

It comes just months after Grande unveiled a cruelty-free vegan perfume, God Is A Woman. The iconic musician is a longtime supporter of animal rights and has even opened her own rescue center in Los Angeles, California.

Moreover, the 28-year-old has adopted 10 rescue dogs herself – as well as a pig named Piggy.

Kylie Jenner is rolling out a vegan make-up range for her 24th birthday, which was last week.

The 24k Birthday Collection is gold-themed and part of the newly revamped company that promises to be completely ‘clean’ and vegan.

Vegan birthday collection

Upon the release on August 10, the mogul said: “I wanted to do something extra special this year.

“The 24K Birthday Palette is one of my favorite palettes yet. And, every product in this collection is a brand new formula we’ve never done before, plus clean and vegan!”

It features a highlighter, lip serum, gloss, and eyeliner as well as a pressed powder palette and lip lacquer set.

Additionally, a signed PR box is available including the entire collection for $350.

It comes months after the star announced she was giving her iconic lip kits a ‘makeover’ in turning them vegan. This involved a re-decoration of the Instagram account that promotes the products.

Jenner promoted the vegan make-up collection via social media

Kylie Jenner

Following in the footsteps of her older sisters, Kylie Jenner revealed she is ‘really trying to not eat meat‘ earlier this year. It has been four years since she told fans she was trying out veganism.

Despite this, she’s come under fire for sporting animal fur.

Both Kim Kardashian and Kourtney Kardashian, Jenner’s half-siblings, are advocates for plant-based eating. Kim even revealed she takes the vegan meat brand Beyond Meat with her everywhere she travels.

Is Shampoo Vegan? What You Need To Know https://plantbasednews.org/lifestyle/beauty/is-shampoo-vegan/ https://plantbasednews.org/lifestyle/beauty/is-shampoo-vegan/#respond Fri, 16 Jul 2021 19:36:38 +0000 https://plantbasednews.org/?p=252224 Not all companies use cruelty-free methods to produce their haircare products. Here's some vegan shampoos to look out for – and some ingredients to avoid

The post Is Shampoo Vegan? What You Need To Know appeared first on Plant Based News.

]]>
As more people tune into the impact of the purchases they make – whether it be food, clothing, or cosmetics – many have started looking closer at their haircare products and questioning whether their shampoo is vegan. As a result, the demand for cruelty-free beauty products made with vegan ingredients is soaring.

In 2017, The Body Shop partnered with Cruelty Free International. The collaboration resulted in the launch of a petition calling for a worldwide ban on cosmetic animal testing. The petition amassed 8.3 million signatures.

Further, research from last year estimated that the US market for vegan cosmetics will surpass $3 billion by the end of 2025.

But a lot of companies have been slow to adapt to shifting consumer preferences, and still include non-vegan ingredients in their products.

Which ingredients do you need to look for?

Animal-derived ingredients are surprisingly common in hair products. Shellac is secreted by female lac bugs and is sometimes used to make hair sprays. Glycerin, which can moisturize hair, is sometimes sourced from plants but also from animals, like cows and sheep. Lanolin, a wax secreted by the sebaceous glands of sheep, is used to moisturize hair.

Stearic acid (typically from pigs’ stomachs), casein (usually obtained from cow’s milk), squalene (a compound that comes from shark liver oil), keratin (from feathers, horns, or wool), and beeswax are all used in hair products.

Which shampoo brands are vegan?

Some non-vegan brands are taking steps towards reducing animal cruelty. Haircare brand Aussie joined PETA’s Beauty Without Bunnies program in 2019. The move reflected the brand’s commitment to not test on animals anywhere in the world.

The same year, cosmetics brand Lush stopped using eggs in its products, and a growing number of all-vegan companies are joining store shelves everywhere.

Here is a brief list of haircare brands offering cruelty-free, vegan shampoos.

ACURE

All of ACURE’s products are vegan-friendly Credit: ACURE

All-vegan beauty brand ACURE is on a mission to make better-for-you hair and skin products more accessible, according to its Facebook page.

ACURE is part of the Leaping Bunny Program – the highest standard for American and Canadian companies that don’t test on animals. It means that no ingredients or formulations used in manufacturing or production can involve animal testing.

ACURE’s hair products are also free from sulfates, parabens, mineral oils, petrolatum, and formaldehyde.

ACURE produces clarifying shampoo, color protecting shampoo, dry shampoo, as well as shampoos featuring apple cider vinegar, hemp, watermelon, blood orange, spirulina, kale, and spinach.

The company also offers vegan deodorants, facial creams, cleansing bars, jelly masks, eye creams, and body scrubs.

Noughty

On its website, UK brand Noughty pledges to ‘do better, be better, and make a difference’. “At Noughty, we love animals. We make sure this is reflected in everything we do, so our products have never been tested on animals. Ever,” the company writes, adding that it is ‘very proud’ to only use vegan ingredients.

Noughty – which is Leaping Bunny-approved – offers vegan shampoos for: defining curls, adding moisture to hair, clarifying, soothing the scalp, colored hair, and adding volume. It also offers a range of vegan conditioners, as well as hair sprays, body scrubs, and body polish.

Nylah’s Naturals

This all-vegan brand received funding to expand worldwide Credit: Nylah’s Naturals

Nylah’s Naturals offers products for Afro and curly hair. Its range includes Strength and Shine Thickening Shampoo, Super Botanical’s Restorative Conditioner, Maximum Moisture Hair Sprits, and Moisture Retention Leave In Cream.

All of Nylah’s Naturals’ products are cruelty-free, vegan, and free from parabens and synthetic fragrances.

CEO and Founder Kameese Davis appeared on British TV series Dragon’s Den earlier this year. She received a £50,000 investment to expand the business globally. In a statement sent to Plant Based News, Davis said: “By pitching my project to the Den, I was hoping to not just receive the investment. But, create a path for other aspiring entrepreneurs who are from a similar background.

“Nylah’s Naturals has always been about authenticity and diversity. And I hope to raise awareness about those groups of entrepreneurs who have been systematically underfunded.”

Giovanni

Giovanni uses organic ingredients to make its paraben- and sulfate-free hair products Credit: Giovanni

This family-owned and operated hair care company offers salon-inspired shampoo and conditioner. Hydrating hemp shampoo, frizz-reducing shampoo, repairing and color-safe shampoo, and activated charcoal shampoo with volcanic ash are all available.

Giovanni is cruelty-free and uses USDA Certified Organic ingredients. The brand is paraben- and sulfate-free, however, not all of Giovanni’s products are vegan.

The company’s range includes ‘salon-quality’ pet care products designed to moisturise your pet’s skin and encourage shiny fur. The vegan cat- and dog-friendly line includes oatmeal and coconut shampoos and conditioner, as well as multipurpose wipes. Giovanni will donate 10 percent of the range’s 2021 website sales to Welsh Terrier Cares, which rescues and rehomes Welsh Terriers.

Giovanni will also gift a care package to anyone who adopts a dog through the organization.

The post My Chemical Romance Launch New Vegan Makeup Line appeared first on Plant Based News.

]]>
My Chemical Romance has just released their latest makeup collection. The 2000s rock band collaborated with HipDot to create the cosmetics line. Like the rest of HipDot’s products, the new My Chemical Romance range is cruelty-free and made with vegan ingredients.

The band’s 2010 album Danger Days: The True Lives Of The Fabulous Killjoys inspired the makeup line.

It features a white eyeliner duo set, a white primer pot, a four-piece lip gloss set, and an eyeliner palette. The palette features neon colors like green, pink, and orange as well as some metallics and a brown transition shade.

The eyeshadow squares each sport the outline of a spider, a nod to the Danger Days album artwork.

My Chemical Romance

My Chemical Romance launched their first makeup line in December. The Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge collection sold out immediately. Like the most recent launch, the 2020 range was also made with vegan ingredients and without testing on animals.

The launches are not the first time the band has made a statement about animal welfare. In 2008, peta2 (the youth division of PETA) released an interview with My Chemical Romance.

In the video, lead vocalist Gerard Way said: “The band is obviously opposed to animal cruelty.”

He explained that when he was in high school, teachers would punish students who didn’t want to dissect an animal in class.

“They’d give them a D because they didn’t want to dissect an animal … The kid should have a choice if he wants to dissect an animal or not,” the musician said. “The point is to learn. You’ll still learn the same way if there’s a good alternative, so why should you have to use an animal?”

He advised students on what to do if they’re faced with the same situation.

“First I think go to your parents. If your parents are kind of sh*tty or tough on you, or they don’t understand – guidance counselor. You can contact PETA and get them involved, or go to your principal.”

Way added: “Activism is expressing yourself.”

It’s unknown whether any of the band is vegan, but rhythm guitarist and backup vocalist Frank Iero has been vegetarian since childhood.

My Chemical Romance’s new makeup line is available to pre-order between July 22 and July 29. It will ship to Australia, Canada, Germany, Ireland, Netherlands, the UK, and the US.

The post Ariana Grande To Release Cruelty-Free Vegan Perfume appeared first on Plant Based News.

]]>
Ariana Grande has announced the release of her new vegan perfume. The name of the cruelty-free fragrance is God Is A Woman, after her 2018 song of the same name.

Most (91 percent) of the fragrance is naturally derived. It’s made with clean, plant-based ingredients and is not tested on animals.

Is perfume vegan?

Whilst vegan beauty products are becoming more popular, not all perfumes are vegan.

Some fragrance producers use kasturi – sourced from a gland between a deer’s back and rectum. Also used is castoreum from the castor sacs of beavers, and musk, obtained from male musk deers.

Some perfume producers use civet, from the African mammal of the same name. Moreover, animal testing is common in perfume production.

Grande’s new perfume is made with plant-based ingredients

Is Ariana Grande vegan?

In 2013, Grande wrote on Twitter that she had gone vegan. Since then she has adopted around 10 rescue dogs and a pig, named Piggy Smallz, who Grande says is an emotional support animal.

In November, Grande opened an animal rescue center in Los Angeles. The non-profit, called Orange Twins Rescue, rescues and rehabilitates dogs, cats, and pigs.

“Senior animals, strays, neglected, abused, or special needs, we do not discriminate and are proud of our fast-acting, effective, and loving work,” the website reads.

Grande received criticism in 2019 after promoting a non-vegan Starbucks drink. She shared a photo online of the coffee chain’s Cloud Macchiato, writing ‘Try the soy version’. However, Starbucks later confirmed that even with dairy-free milk, the beverage is not vegan. The ‘cloud powder’ contains eggs and the caramel sauce contains milk.

Ariana Grande’s new vegan perfume will be available in stores on August 1, and on Ulta Beauty from July 29.

Business mogul and reality star Kylie Jenner has announced she’s giving her iconic Kylie Cosmetics lip kit make-up range a ‘little makeover’.

New products will be vegan, and boast long-wear.

Kylie Cosmetics lip kits

The revamp comes six years after the star first launched the lip kits under the Kylie Cosmetics brand.

Now, the Instagram page used to promote the brand has been transformed ahead of the new launch – with all previous imagery deleted.

Weeks ago, she posted a photo and hinted ‘something is coming’. This week, she began promoting the new and improved ‘high gloss’ available in 30 shades.

As well as being vegan, it is ‘non-sticky’, and softening, the company claims.

Kylie Cosmetics joins Jenner’s sister company, Kylie Skin, in being vegan. Moreover, Kylie Skin is cruelty-free.

However, details are yet to be released on whether the new Kylie Cosmetics will also be cruelty-free.

Kylie Jenner

Jenner began promoting the new products on Instagram

Earlier this year, Jenner told her more than 220 million followers that she was ‘really trying’ to not eat meat.

In an Instagram story, she showed off some meat-free food – despite coming under fire for wearing fur in the past.

Plant-based family

Jenner is the half-sister of reality TV star Kim Kardashian – who has become increasingly open about her plant-heavy dieting.

This year she told her millions of fans that the diet ‘does a body good’. However, it was met with criticism as many accused Kardashian of pushing unrealistic beauty standards.

Fellow half-sibling Kourtney Kardashian is also favoring plant-based eating and discussed her journey in a recent interview with Vogue.

Moreover, she’s used her platform to encourage fans to watch Seaspiracy and ditch fish.

The new line will soon be available via Kylie Cosmetics here

Ariel Beninca, a vegan model and designer from Brisbane is eyeing the prestigious Miss Australia World 2021 title.

Since making the switch to veganism a decade ago, Beninca is a passionate environmental campaigner.

Miss World Australia 2021

The pageant is part of the wider Miss World competition, and if successful, Beninca will represent her country on an international scale.

In a statement sent to PBN, she said she couldn’t believe she’d made it to the final.

She added: “To win Miss World Australia 2021 would mean everything to me. To represent my country on the world stage would be the opportunity of a lifetime.

“It’s also a great opportunity to educate my platform on global issues.”

The designer uses her social media platform to show off her favorite plant-based spots in Brisbane, including her top vegan pizza.

In a bid to helping her audience eat less meat and dairy, she recently said on an Instagram story: “Vegan chicken: you can still have chicken without harming chickens.”
